When Boats Become Pollution

Abandoned vessels are more than forgotten pieces of maritime history. As they deteriorate, they can release fuel residues, oil, fiberglass, plastics, treated wood, and other materials into surrounding waterways. In tidal environments, these vessels may remain for years, gradually breaking apart while affecting navigation, habitat, and water quality.
